“Entre dos aguas: haciéndose el inocente,
para poder defenderse en caso necesario...Descatolizado hasta el punto que
puede serlo un español, que no es demasiado...Hipócrita en el buen sentido
de la palabra, que lo tiene. Atrevido sin querer. Amigo del desacato a las
autoridades siempre que no entrañe peligro para él...Nada rencoroso;
cascarrabias a veces; algo quisquilloso; malicioso...
excelente.” .Max Aub. |

A masterpiece from Luis Bunuel in which the cool Catherine Deneuve sparkles as a respectable middle-class wife with a very contented husband, who finds a day job in a brothel that gives her an outlet for deeper, darker passions. "Bunuel constructs both a clear portrait of the bourgeoisie as degenerate, dishonest and directionless, and an unhysterical depiction of Deneuve's inner fantasy life where she entertains dreams of humiliations galore" (Geoff Andrew). A thriller with a surrealist's touch, this is one of Bunuel's most accessible and fascinating films. Fleeing a repressive government, a group of misfits (a miner, a prostitute, a priest and a deaf-mute girl) escape through the Amazon jungle. As the journey becomes more arduous, the characters begin to shed their petty differences and work toward a common good. The discovery of a crashed airliner supplying food and money introduces a renewed unpleasantness in the group. With Georges Marchal, Michel Piccoli and Simone Signoret. A metaphorically rich and comic film, Exterminating Angel is the story of guests invited to an elegant dinner party who find they are unable to leave at the end of the evening. A mysterious force compels them to stay…and stay…and stay. After several days, their well-heeled social facades collapse as hunger, thirst, fear, and boredom send them into a frenzy. Bunuel stated that this film is "a metaphor, a deeply felt, disturbing reflection of the life of modern man, a witness to the fundamental preoccupations of our time." It is certainly one of Bunuel's greatest achievements. Spanish with English subtitles. |

The first feature film by master filmmaker Luis Bunuel to be made during his stint in Mexico, this musical western is standard genre fare, boasting few of the social criticisms and surrealist elements of his earlier and later periods. Bunuel's masterpiece extolls love and attacks religion and the social order in an amazing assemblage of images that remain no less provocative today than they were in 1930. Its central metaphor is a couple making love who are continually disturbed by the intrusions of officialdom, police and the Church. It remains one of the most unashamedly erotic films ever made, with a famous toe-sucking sequence. Financed by the Vicomte de Noailles, who gave Bunuel complete freedom and declared it "exquisite and delicious," the film immediately became the object of right-wing extremists and remained unseen for generations because of the Church's threat to excommunicate the Vicomte if the film were distributed. Luis Bunuel's only American film is a powerful work about racism and sexual exploitation. A northern black jazz clarinetist (Bernie Hamilton) fleeing from false rape charges turns up on a small island off the Carolina coast and finds himself being hunted by a game warden (Zachary Scott). The sheriff's racial bigotry flares openly, though he is concealing his own perverse sexual fixation on a beautiful young nymphet (Kay Meersman). "A film that is realistically simple in all its parts, and realistically complex in its total picture of life and people" (Newsweek). With Crahan Denton and Claudio Brook. |

Three classics from the droll and mischievous auteur Luis Bunuel are presented together in this triple bill. Includes Diary of a Chambermaid (1964, 97 mins.), a witty and satirical adaptation of Octave Mirbeau's novel (originally adapted in 1946 by Jean Renoir) starring Jeanne Moreau as an ambitious servant-turned-social climber. Finally, The Milky Way (1969, 102 mins.) uses a puzzling, surrealist narrative to lampoon the Roman Catholic church with scathing and unrelenting zeal. In French with English subtitles. |

Filmed in Paris in 1929, Un Chien Andalou is a landmark in the history of cinema. Based on an exchange of dreams between the Spanish duo of Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali, this jolting tale of desire contains one of the most notorious and potently metaphoric sequences in film history: a razor severing a woman's eyeball in extreme close-up. Drawing from the vivid lives of their subconsciouses, Bunuel and Dali's only rule was to reject any idea that might lend itself to any rational explanation. Intended to provoke rather than please (Bunuel saw it as an "appeal to murder"), the film's power to shock the viewer remains undiminished after 75 years. | |
