Barth, John

1. End of the Road

Aram Avakian

1970

Filmed before Easy Rider but released afterwards, End of the Road has
largely been forgotten, but it is arguably the more potent examination of
the erosion of '60s idealism. Based on a novel by John Barth and co-scripted
by Terry Southern (who also helped write Easy Rider), this bizarre film stars
Stacy Keach as a recent graduate who goes from a catatonic state to an
experimental mental hospital to teaching English at a small college. At the
school, he becomes involved with the wife of another teacher and his
self-involved essence leads to a bleak outcome. This neglected gem also
stars James Earl Jones, Harris Yulin, Dorothy Tristan and James Coco,
and was Gordon Willis' first feature as a cinematographer.

Bellow, Saul

1. Seize the Day

Fielder Cook

1986

Robin Williams plays Tommy Wilhelm in this faithful adaptation of the
great Saul Bellow novel of the same title. Nearing 40, a failure, desperately
alone and much abused by the society at large, Tommy befriends a shyster,
who finds him ripe for the picking. A melancholy tale well told through a weave
of past and present. With Robin Williams, Joseph Wiseman, Jerry Stiller,
Glenne Headly and Tony Roberts.

Bierce, Ambrose

1. Ambrose Bierce's Civil War Stories

This two-volume set features An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Robert
Enrico, France, 1962, 27 mins.), one of the most widely seen and admired
short films ever made. It atmospherically captures Bierce's tale of a man
who is about to be hanged when the rope suddenly snaps and he is able to
escape...for the moment. Also included is Parker Adderson, Philosopher
(Arthur Barron, Canada, 1974, 39 mins.). Harris Yulin tops the cast of this
television version of Bierce's story about a Yankee spy captured by Confederate
forces. Part of The American Short Story Collection series, this PBS production
includes an introduction from Henry Fonda.

Nazimova and based on drawings by Aubrey Beardsley; The Fall of the
House of Usher

Allan Poe's tale; Watson and Webber's Lot in Sodom, an experimental telling
of the Old Testament story in terms of homosexuality and the subconscious;

5. La Jetee/An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

One of the most challenging films ever made, Chris Marker's neo-science
fiction film is set in a ruined France after World War III, in which a man's vivid
childhood experience allows him to travel forward and backward in time. As
a grown man, he meets the girl he had glimpsed as a child at the airport,
falls in love with her, chooses to remain in the past, but is executed by those
who hold power in the future. France, 1962, 29 mins. Also contains An
Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
, directed by Robert Enrico and based on
a short story by Ambrose Bierce, which tells the tale of a man who is about
to be hanged when the rope suddenly snaps and he is able to escape.
Unfortunately, his newly found freedom is short-lived. France, 1962, 27 mins.

2. Beat the Devil

John Huston

1953

Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Robert Morley and Peter Lorre top the cast of this audacious, offbeat comedy about a motley group of petty thieves and con artists hoping to grab some valuable uranium deposits. "The birthplace of camp, with John Huston parodying the kind of material that made him a star director (The Maltese Falcon) and Truman Capote providing a ragged, day-by-day screenplay that left the actors stranded (and in Humphrey Bogart's case, visibly annoyed)" (Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader).
