Diccionario de la Prosa Castellana de Alfonso X el Sabio se basa en el léxico de los textos que se han considerado emanados de la cámara de Alfonso X, rey de Castilla y León entre 1254 y 1284. Son, por tanto en su mayoría textos absolutamente fidedignos, que ofrecen especial interés lingüístico por constituir la primera tentativa de redactar un extenso corpus de textos en lengua vernácula estandarizada y supervisada, por lo menos en parte, por el mismo Rey Sabio. Aunque algunos historiadores han cuestionado la procedencia y fecha de composición de algunos de los manuscritos... se decidió transcribir ... todos los textos seleccionados para su inclusión en el diccionario de la prosa alfonsí (aproximadamente cinco millones de palabras).

Empleando como modelo el Oxford English Dictionary, el Diccionario de la Prosa Castellana de Alfonso X ofrece citas ilustrativas que aparecen ordenadas cornológicamente dentro de cada acepción. A diferencia de la metodología adoptada para el Tentative Dictionary of Medieval Spanish, se decidió emplear como lema la forma moderna (etimológicamente relacionada) de la palabra si ésta existe.”

A completely revised and greatly expanded edition of a major work:
Double-column format, containing approx. 26,000 headwords derived from 86 texts that cover the period 1140-1489.

The first edition of this influential lexicographical work was published in 1946 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This dictionary differs significantly in aim and in scope from the computer-based Dictionary of the Old Spanish Language. A crucial difference is that the Tentative Dictionary relied almost exclusively on published editions for its lexical material while the editors of the DOSL prepared new, electronic transcriptions as the basis of its compilation.
