The
Art and Tradition of the Zuloagas
Spanish
Damascene from the Khalili Collection
Written and Edited by JAMES D. LAVIN, College of William and
Mary, Virginia
with an Essay by RAMIRO LARRAÑAGA
This book offers a fascinating introduction to the ancient
art of damascening--the process of embellishing
metal objects with intricate designs of gold and silver inlay in
splendid works of art ranging from urns and
caskets to mirror frames and furniture. It is published to
coincide with the first major exhibition ever devoted to the work
of Placido Zuloaga (1834-1910), one of the great masters of the art,
at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, from May 1997 to
January 1998.

Dutch
Paintings of the Seventeenth Century
ARTHUR WHEELOCK, Jr., National Gallery of Art
From the hardships of a long and arduous war with Spain,
the seventeenth-century Dutch seem to have drawn strength and
expressed pride in their unique social and cultural heritage,
especially in their art. Arthur K. Wheelock Jr.,
the Gallery's curator of northern Baroque painting, has carefully
studied the Gallery's collection by masters of the Golden Age of
Dutch art--notably Cuyp, De Hooch, Rembrandt,
Ruisdael, and Vermeer. The twenty-three paintings by Rembrandt
and his school are elucidated by an essay on the question of
attribution, while an appendix of artists' signatures amplifies
and supports the author's wide-ranging discussions of this
remarkably cohesive collection.

and Carpets
VIRGINIA BOWER, JOSEPHINE HADLEY KNAPP, Freer Gallery of Art,
Smithsonian Institute, Washington, STEPHEN LITTLE, Art
Institute of Chicago, and ROBERT WILSON TORCHIA
With contributions by JUDY OZONE and WILLIAM SARGENT
This volume explores a group of the Gallery's decorative
arts, mainly drawn from the renowned collections of the Widener
and Steele families. The focus of the catalogue is on the
collection of Chinese ceramics, which ranges from earthenware and
stoneware to polychrome procelain, with a concentration on pieces
from the Qing dynasty (1644-1722). The carpets from Lynnewood
Hall, P.A.B. Widener's home in Pennsylvania, are also catalogued
and published here for the first time.

with the assistance of KELLY PASK
The Getty Museum's collection of drawings
was begun in 1981 with the purchase of a Rembrandt nude and has
since become an important repository of European
works from the fifteenth through the nineteenth century. As in
the first volume devoted to the collection (published in 1988 in
English and Italian editions), the text is here organized first
by national school, then alphabetically by artist, with
individual works arranged chronologically. For each drawing, the
authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating,
iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as
provenance and a complete bibliography.

1999 Abbott Lowell Cummings Award of the Vernacular
Architecture Forum Named a 1998 Outstanding Academic Book by Choice |
American architecture is astonishingly varied. From Native American sites in New Mexico and Arizona, and the ancient earthworks of the Mississippi Valley, to the most fashionable contemporary buildings of Chicago and New York, the United States boasts three thousand years of architectural history. It is characterized by the diversity of its builders and consumers who include Native American men and women, African, Asian, and European immigrants, as well as renowned professional architects and urban planners.
Leading historian Dell Upton's revolutionizing interpretation
examines American architecture in relation to five themes:
community, nature, technology, money, and art. In giving
particular attention to indigenous, folk, ethnic, and popular
architectures like Chaco Canyon, the Brooklyn Bridge, and Native
American houses, as well as to the great monuments of traditional
histories such as Jeffersons Monticello and Wrights Fallingwater,
Architecture in the United States reveals the dazzling
richness of America's human landscape.
