From Renoir and Picasso to Red Grooms and Guerrilla Girls,
this is the most useful reference work on twentieth-century art
available in a one volume. Compiled by Ian Chilvers, the editor
of The Oxford Dictionary of Art,
it is both authoritative and accessible, with generous use of
anecdote and clear explanations of many potentially confusing
terms.
Providing broad coverage of painting, sculpture, drawing, and
the applied arts, the dictionary has major entries on the
important movements and styles of the twentieth century,
including Dada, Cubism, Surrealism, Art Deco,
Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, Body and
Performance art, and Neo Expressionism. In
addition there are entries on art schools and
galleries, exhibitions and prizes, terms and techniques. The
biographies feature not only artists but also collectors,
critics, dealers, and patrons. And though the dictionary
concentrates on the great names, it is not confined to the
mainstream of modern art, featuring many artists
working in a more popular tradition as well as interesting
peripheral figures (such as the forger Elmyr de Hory).
This up-to-date and informative guide is an essential reference
for anyone interested in modern art.

Lying at the heart of the Western classical tradition, the
rich legacy of the arts of ancient Greece and Rome continues to
provide inspiration and guidance to artists and art
lovers everywhere. Lavishly illustrated and masterfully prepared
under the editorships of John Boardman, one of the world's
preeminent classicists, The Oxford History of Classical Art
offers readers the definitive companion to the artistic and
architectural achievements of the Greco-Roman world, from the
rise of the Greek city-states to the fall of the Roman Empire.
Written by Boardman and a team of distinguished experts including J.J. Pollitt, Alan W. Johnston, R.R.R. Smith, and Janet Huskinson, this sumptuous volume presents the full pageantry and glory of the classical world, tracing the origins and evolution of classical art as it gradually moved from the art of individuals and small communities to the art of a world power. Particular attention is paid throughout to the splendor and quality of the arts themselves, aptly represented in 442 stunningly beautiful black and white and full-color plates.
Destined to become the definitive sourcebook in its field, The
Oxford History of Classical Art is
indispensable for anyone intrigued by the timeless heritage of
the ancient world.
"The text moves along briskly, with never a word
wasted....The Oxford History goes straight
to the point and sticks to it all the way."--The
New York Times Book Review
"Most impressive....It functions as both a definitive
history and a reference to all the major artworks produced by
classical civilization."--The Philadelphia
Inquirer
"The changing forms of classical art,
the differing societies and patrons for whom artifacts were
produced, the roles and objectives of the artists, and the manner
in which classical art was
disseminated throughout the ancient world are all well analyzed
and well presented."--Library Journal
For the first timeła comprehensive, interdisciplinary survey of critical issues in art, culture, and society.
This landmark reference work is the first of its kind. Featuring 600 original articles by distinguished scholars from many countries, it integrates classic and contemporary scholarship about the arts, culture, and society. It broadens the meaning of the term "aesthetics" to embrace scholarship in such fields as art history, musicology, literary theory, anthropology, law, and religion; at the same time, it links current critical reflections about the contexts and uses of the arts to fundamental philosophical questions:
What is art? How do we interpret it? How do we experience it?
This reference work is a masterful combination of in-depth historical coverage of significant ideas, concepts, and figures and balanced, clearly written articles on art as a product of cultureą a source of meaning and moralsą ideologyąpopular expressionąand as an institution that touches all corners of human society.
The first reference work on this scale...or of this scope
The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics covers an extraordinary range of ideas and issues. It is a thorough critical survey of centuries of philosophical questions about artłfrom multi-article entries on Aristotle, Plato, Hegel, and other important figures to concise clearly written introductions to such essential concepts as Truth, Value, and Beauty.
It also explores every major school of critical thought about art in such fields as art history, musicology, cultural studies, and more. Four articles from different perspectives examine how Feminism has transformed the way art is understood and judged. Nine articles comprise the entry on Politicsłexamining the historic tension between artistic creation and political engagement to the impact of such crises as AIDS on the making of art. Other articles illuminate the different meanings and uses of such key terms as Narrative, Representation, Nature.
A rich survey of all the arts in many eras and cultures
HereĘs a source of critical knowledge about all the arts, from painting and sculpture to film and photography, dance and opera and theater to jazz, rock, and television. The Art and Architecture Thesaurus
(AAT) provides a standard, controlled vocabulary for use by
indexers, catalogers, and other professionals concerned with
information management in the fields of art and
architecture. This new, complete second edition contains more
than 90,000 words and phrases used to describe objects,
materials, activities, agents, styles and periods, physical
attributes, and associated concepts in the disciplines of fine
arts, architecture, decorative arts, and material culture of the
Western world from antiquity to the present. The vocabulary is
presented both in hierarchical displays and in alphabetical
order, providing the user with precise information on
definitions, relationships, and dependencies of related terms.
The standardized vocabulary allows the primary users to compile
accurate, consistent records of items in their collections.
Applicable to a broad range of archival and special collections,
the AAT can be used to describe not only objects but also
visual surrogates of objects (slides, photographs, etc.),
documents and records, and publications.
Each recommended term, or descriptor, included in the AAT represents a single concept; synonyms and spelling variants are included as "lead-in terms." The second edition contains 24,496 descriptors, 2,756 guide terms, and 63,003 alternate and lead-in terms, for a total American English vocabulary of 87,499 terms. Also included are 3,462 related terms and 1,812 British English descriptors, alternate terms, and lead-in terms. The addition of British English terms in the second edition enhances the use of the AAT for an international audience.
The Guide to Indexing and Cataloging with the Art
and Architecture Thesaurus is directed to members of four
major indexing and cataloging communities--archives, libraries,
museums, and visual resources collections--and is intended to
train them in the use of the AAT vocabulary as an indexing
tool. The Guide includes a general introduction, specific
instructions for indexing special materials, and separate
chapters directed to each of the four user communities, written
by an expert practitioner and vetted by peer review. Also
included in the volume are a section devoted to management and
policy issues arising from local applications of a standardized
indexing vocabulary, a glossary of technical terms used in the
volume, and a bibliography of suggested readings on subject
analysis, indexing, and controlled vocabulary usage. This volume
is set-packed with the five volumes of the second edition of the AAT
and is also available as open stock.
The
Arts of War
Arms
and Armour of the 7th to 19th Centuries
DAVID ALEXANDER
This is a lavishly illustrated presentation of the Nasser
D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art's collection of arms and
armor. The items range in date from the seventh to the nineteenth
centuries A.D. In avoiding the strictly typological
classification of most previous catalogues of the subject, the
aim is to give a full sense of the panoply of warfare: the
stirrup, the drum, and the talismanic shirt were as important to
the Muslim warrior as the sword and the mail shirt. David
Alexander, the leading authority on Islamic arms and armor, has
provided a detailed scholarly guide to this outstanding
collection.
